The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced Wednesday that a busy Algiers intersection will partially close while the Corps improves drainage on New Orleans' west bank.
"The James W. Hibben Memorial Bridge on the corner of General de Gaulle and Holiday Drive will be closed in both directions beginning Wednesday, February 18, 2026, to support vital construction work as part of the federally funded Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA) project," the corps announced.
This means traffic on Holiday Drive will be unable to cross Gen. de Gaulle.
"Motorists and residents are advised to plan alternate travel routes and allow extra time for commutes," the Corps said.
The Corps estimates the work will last through April 19.
The Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project supports master plans of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish to provide flood risk protection associated with a ten-year rain storm. That describes a rain event that has a ten percent chance of happening in a given year, or approximately nine inches of rainfall in a 24-hour period.
