An Opelousas man was taken into custody last week after allegedly shooting his own brother.
Police say Christopher Vidrine, 34, attacked his brother while intoxicated when his brother came to his home to check on him at the request of another family member.
Vidrine was angered by his brother’s visit and threatened to kill him, leading to a physical altercation, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.
When Vidrine’s brother, who was not named by authorities, started removing firearms from the house, Vidrine became livid, grabbed a small caliber rifle, and started shooting at his brother, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told KPEL.
Eventually, Vidrine shot his brother in the hand but was aiming for his head as he chased him around his vehicle outside the home.
Vidrine’s brother managed to deploy pepper spray, causing Vidrine to retreat back into the house, allowing the brother to escape to a neighbor’s home and call police.
The SLPSO was joined by a SWAT team and negotiators as Vidrine had barricaded himself inside the home.
He was eventually extricated “using less than lethal force” after negotiations failed and was arrested.
Vidrine has been charged with attempted second degree murder.
