New Orleans Police say around noon on Monday a man was driving near the corner of Tulane Avenue and South Roberston Street. He stopped at a red light when someone walked up to his car.
"The victim was sitting in his vehicle at the stoplight when the male subject approached him, opening the rear driver-side door giving verbal command for his to exit," according to an initial police report.
Investigators say the victim complied, exited the vehicle, and walked to the sidewalk.
"The subject then closed the rear door, entered the vehicle through the front driver’s side door, and fled in the victim's 2017 gray Volkswagen Golf. The vehicle was last observed heading westbound on Tulane Ave then unknown."
NOPD says there have been at least 37 carjacking this year in the city. That's down from about 61 for the first half of 2024. Department crime stats show that is a 41% drop in carjackings and part of a 22% overall crime decrease for the year.
