
The Louisiana State Police are investigating how a man died while in police custody on Sunday.
According to an LSP report, shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Dec. 19, deputies with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash on Borgne Avenue in Bogalusa. When deputies arrived they found that the driver of the vehicle, 28-year-old Eric L. Nelson of Bogalusa, had multiple vehicle crash felony warrants previously issued in Bogalusa.
Officers with the Bogalusa Police Department arrived on the scene at the request of the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Upon their arrival, Nelson attempted to flee on foot says the report. After a brief foot pursuit, Nelson was taken into custody by the Bogalusa Police Department. During the foot chase, officers used a Taser on Nelson.
While officers transported Nelson to the Bogalusa City Jail, the report says he complained of trouble breathing.
Bogalusa Police Department Officers called emergency medical services for assistance. After EMS checked him out, Nelson was transported to a local hospital where he died while receiving treatment.
This is an active investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available.
