Man fatally shot in encounter with JPSO reported as child abuser, sheriff says

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office today released more details about a deadly deputy-involved shooting over the weekend in Metairie.

Saturday evening around 6:40 p.m., deputies were called to the 6400 block of Park Manor Drive. A woman reported her boyfriend, 30-year-old Joshua Mitchell, had sexually abused a child.

"When deputies arrived, the complainant explained that when she confronted Mitchell about sexually abusing the child, Mitchell admitted to the sexual abuse and then threatened to kill the complainant," said JPSO Capt. Jason Rivarde. "The complainant warned the responding deputies that Mitchell was armed and had a history of confrontations with law enforcement."

About two and a half hours later, the sheriff's office says Mitchell came out of the residence and pointed a gun at a deputy. That deputy, the sheriff's office says, fired his weapon at Mitchell, who then went back inside the apartment.

"The JPSO Crisis Management Unit was immediately activated and responded to the scene," said Rivarde. "Mitchell again exited the apartment and pointed the gun at a Crisis Management Unit deputy, who fired at Mitchell.  Mitchell then went back into the apartment for a second time."

Around 10:30, the sheriff's office entered the residence and found Mitchell, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The wounds did not appear to be self-inflicted, according to the sheriff's office.

The case is still under investigation.
