The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigated after a man arrested and in police custody, dies of a suspected drug overdose on his way to jail.
It happened Wednesday evening as a JPSO deputy was transporting an arrestee to jail.
“During this transport, the deputy noticed the arrestee appeared to be in some form of medical distress. The deputy requested that EMS meet him outside the correctional center to evaluate the arrestee.
Captain Rivarde says the deputy noticed that the arrestee had vomited in the rear of the patrol vehicle. Several bundles of suspected narcotics were recovered from within the man’s vomit.
The arrestee was then transported to a local hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead while at the hospital.
An official cause of death will be determined following autopsy and toxicology examinations.
