Many people evacuate Saturday ahead of Ida

Ida

I-10 traffic through Metairie and Kenner and in Slidell was bumper to bumper early Saturday morning as more people moved away from Hurricane Ida's landfall zone.

With all of the New Orleans metro area under voluntary or mandatory evacuations, many people hit the road Saturday.

The largest volume of traffic was heading west out of the region in I-10.  There was also some congestion heading east on I-10, but not as much.

Northern routes on I-55 and I-59 were clear.

The good news, once people got out Southeast Louisiana, the traffic conditions improved.

Lines were also long at gas stations.  Some were out of gas or some grades of gasoline.

As of the 4:00am advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Ida was forecast to hit Sunday night as a category four hurricane near Morgan City.  The winds are forecast to hit 140 miles per hour before landfall.

Mandatory evacuations are in place for everyone in St. Charles Parish, Lafourche Parish and Terrebonne Parish. Everyone outside the levee protection is also under a mandatory evacuation in Jefferson, Orleans, St. John, and Plaquemines Parish.

The rest of the area is under a voluntary evacuation.
