A Tulane economics professor's study finds Mardi Gras in New Orleans has an economic impact of nearly $900 million.
Prof. Toni Weiss' study found a direct and indirect impact of $891,202,780 from Mardi Gras 2023.
This was Weiss' fourth study on the economic impact of Mardi Gras and her first since 2014.
That study found an impact of around $465 million.
According to Weiss. Mardi Gras events make up more than three percent of New Orleans' gross domestic product.
It also found that for every dollar the city spent on Mardi Gras, it got back $2.64.
And for the state of Louisiana, Mardi Gras in New Orleans means $14,300,000 in tax revenue.
"Carnival in New Orleans is one of the most remarkable and influential events on the planet," said Walt Leger III, President and CEO of New Orleans & Company. "That people come from around the globe to be a part of it, creating such a tremendous economic impact for our people, businesses and city and state, is a testimony to the unique way we live and seamlessly blend creativity, history, culture, and celebration with business and innovation."
