Mayor Cantrell invites council input in police chief search
NOPD

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is asking the New Orleans City Council for input in finding a replacement for retiring New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson.

In a letter sent to members of the council, the mayor says "As we move forward, we have an opportunity to engage in a dialog about the next superintendent. As such, please allow this letter to served as an invitation to meet with each of you to discuss your ideas and suggestions around who could replace Chief Ferguson."

The mayor asks for suggestions by the end of next week, Friday, Dec. 16.

"Additionally, I am able to meet prior to the Final Walk for Chief Ferguson on December 22, 2022," the mayor concludes.

If the mayor selects a new chief before January 1, then that individual would not have to go through the council confirmation process that New Orleans voters overwhelmingly approved on the November ballot.

Nowhere in the mayor's letter does it say whether or not she intends to wait until the charter change takes effect.
