New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell is moving forward with plans to cleanup blight in the city. The new initiative termed “The Dirty Dozen” is a list of twelve notoriously blighted properties that will now get scrapped under this plan.

“We made sure we did our due diligence every step of the way,” the mayor said.

Cantrell explained that the list wasn’t just arbitrarily thrown together, and researching the properties that would be focused on first was a priority, as there are thousands of sites, both residential and commercial, that need attention.

“We are not moving away from other blighted property in the city, but just wanted to concentrate aggressively on the most notable properties,” she said.

Mayor Cantrell previously set a goal of eliminating 10,000 blighted sites in the city. There have been 130 demolitions thus far in 2023.

“Bringing properties back into commerce is what it’s all about. Creating a more viable community,” Cantrell said.
