Metairie Irish-Italian Parade,  other events help metro area usher in spring

Spring has sprung, and a trio of events in the New Orleans Metro will allow you to enjoy the warm weather.

On Saturday, the Tennessee Williams and New Orleans Literary Festival will kick off its 40th year with the annual Stella Shouting Contest. It starts at 2:00 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum on Esplanade.

Also on Saturday, the Fairgrounds will host the Louisiana Derby. Races begin at noon, with the Louisiana Derby itself scheduled for 5:42 p.m.

On Sunday, the Irish-Italian Parade will roll through Metairie at noon. Jefferson Parish Councilman Hans Liljeberg, who represents the district through which the parade rolls, says going to the parade might save you a trip to the grocery store.

"You will not be buying onions, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and all other kinds of produce if you attend this parade. That's for sure," Liljeberg said.

Liljeberg says this year's parade will feature a few special guests. State Senate President Cameron Henry will serve as the Irish grand marshal, and the Golden Band from Tigerland will march in the parade.

"This is the first time in history that the LSU band has marched with a Jefferson Parish parade," Liljeberg said.
