For nearly a century, a restaurant bearing one or more stars from the Michelin Guide has been the mark of fine dining. The publication first began reviewing U.S. restaurants in 2005, and now, for the first time, its reviewers will be considering restaurants in New Orleans and the southeastern region.

"Today, Michelin and Travel South USA revealed that the MICHELIN Guide American South is coming this year as part of a new regional approach, which will include six states, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee," New Orleans & Company President and CEO Walt Leger III announced Wednesday.

Leger says the guide's anonymous reviewers are already at work in New Orleans.

"While there is no guarantee that any restaurant will receive coveted recognition in the MICHELIN Guide, we believe the world-renowned culinary scene in New Orleans is extremely worthy of consideration," Leger said.

Michelin's selections will be announced later this year.
