Even as Congressmen Steve Scalise and Troy Carter won their respective races on Election Day, their two parties are going in opposite directions.
For Democrat Troy Carter, his party taking the majority means hitting the brakes on the Trump White House's agenda.
"We will be restoring the rule of law: the fundamental basics of checks and balances," Carter said election night. "We don't have kings in America, we don't have queens in America. We have a representative form of government in America. We have an America that looks like this room of people of every background, every ZIP code, every party."
But for Congressman Steve Scalise, the Republican majority leader until the new congress is seated in January, it means two years on the outside looking in.
"I will lead the charge to make sure that we get back into the majority because we have got a lot of work to do to get this country back on track," said Scalise.
The 120th Congress of the United States begins January 3.
