NOPD chief Anne Kirkpatrick is pushing back against the suggestion that the police force be downsized.
Louisiana Legislative Auditor Mike Waguespack has been going over the city's books ever since New Orleans had to borrow $125 million late last year to make sure every employee got paid.
According to The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate, one suggestion he's mulling is keeping the NOPD at its current staffing of about 900 officers.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says while the NOPD has been doing great work with that number, it is not sustainable.
"We need to have a little bit more thorough conversation and 900 officers is not acceptable," said Kirkpatrick.
The chief said even though New Orleans is smaller, its police department does a lot or work.
"The size of an organization should be based on call volume, not population," she said, saying NOPD detectives are working caseloads that are twice the national average.
