Can New Orleans clean up its fiscal house in half the time? The mayor seems bullish.
New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno says the cuts her administration has made is already showing savings, and 40 audits of sales tax collections has already realized about $7 million, with 145 more audits to go.
She says the city could dig its way out of its fiscal hole earlier than expected.
"Even Mike Waguespack said, he's like, wait a second, wait, could Helena actually do this? Could she get this done and get this issue solved by 2027?" Moreno told WWL's Newell Normand.
The mayor said initial estimates were that it would take four years to clean up the mess.
"We'd actually be in decent shape, if, obviously, we weren't also paying off the $125 million RAN (revenue anticipation note), with the levels of efficiencies we've put in place and what we're working through," she said.
But the mayor said there is still a lot to do, including her proposal to increase how much New Orleans residents pay to have their trash picked up.
