Fixing New Orleans' crumbling streets, and sidewalks, will be discussed at today's meeting of the New Orleans City Council.
New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno says it's a campaign promise she wants to live up to.
"We needed to have more of that routine maintenance coming in-house so it would be, one, less costly on the city," the mayor said, "but also so that we could get much more done. This is how we can quickly, you know, ensure that our broken sidewalks are fixed, that all of our-- that streets riddled with potholes are smoothed out where there's new millwork, and we can get that done quickly."
The mayor said on her social media that this won't affect the city's budget crisis, because she found millions of dollars in un-assigned bond money dating back to 2019.
Moreno said she's also working with the Louisiana delegation Washington to change FEMA rules to give the city more time to spend federal money meant for street repairs.
The street paving ordinance will be introduced for consideration by the New Orleans City Council today, and will be up for a final vote on Thursday, February 26.
