On her first full day in office, New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno today kicks off her “Lights On” initiative.

The new mayor is calling for citywide lighting improvements.

She says it will make the city safer and make life better.

"This effort will highlight the public safety and quality of life improvements that come with functioning city lighting," according to a mayoral news release.

Moreno joins with District Attorney Jason Williams and others to make the announcement.

Her office say this is "one of the ways she intends to improve basic services as mayor in collaboration, as well as her commitment to collaboration with the City Council and public safety leaders."

Moreno calls this a cornerstone of her 100-day priorities, focused on improving public safety and delivering coordinated infrastructure improvements in every neighborhood.

In addition to Moreno and Williams;  Councilman Jason Hughes, Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Michael Harrison, Deputy Mayor of Infrastructure Stephen Nelson, and New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick will be at the announcement.

"City officials will discuss how improved lighting supports public safety, the city’s data-driven approach to prioritizing repairs, and coordination across departments amid ongoing budget constraints."
