Calling the station “part of the fabric of the city,” former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial joined Scoot to reminisce about his favorite WWL memories as the station turns 100 years old.

“It took alligator skin sometimes to take the punches and take the criticism,” Morial said of the complaints about his administration he would sometimes hear across the Big 870’s airwaves. “But that’s a part of leadership.”

“It was sort of my habit, once I got into office as mayor, I really didn’t listen to the radio that closely because if you did, it would make your blood pressure shoot up,” he added with a laugh.

He also said radio is “a fair way” for elected officials “to engage with the public” when asked if public servants should make regular radio appearances as he did when he was in office.

“I think any way to engage with the public is also a chance to get your message out,” Morial said.
