A mother and her child came face-to-face with an armed carjacker in Mid-City Monday afternoon.

It happened at about 5:00 p.m. in the 3900 block of Bienville Street according to NOPD.

The mother, 33-year-old Erica Thompson Broussard explained what happened in a Facebook post.

She says that she was in the middle of putting her child in the backseat when the armed carjackers struck.

“At this exact moment a car sped into the parking lot, allowing the passenger to hop out of that car and into mine.  He put a gun to my face and shouted to “back the **** up”,” Broussard said in the post. “I placed my hands in the air and tried to stand between the car and James.  Both cars then sped off, each going a different direction. My car doors were still opened.”

“I am telling my story so that everyone...especially women who may be distracted with getting kids in the car...knows to please please please be careful and be aware of your surroundings,” she added.

Police did not give a description of the vehicle stolen nor of any suspects. The investigation is ongoing.

This came around the same time as a series of violent crimes happened across the city that Monday. A survey of crime statistics in New Orleans shows the NOPD is dealing with a spike in violent crime during a time when the police department is operating with fewer officers because of citywide furloughs.
