UPDATE: Causeway officials announced both spans were open as of 4:45 p.m.
Crews closed the Causeway across Lake Pontchartrain after a series of crashes in the fog.
"Fog rolled in very rapidly after 8:30 this morning," Causeway GM Carlton Dufrechou told WWL First News. "We've got multiple crashes on both bridges."
He expected to keep the Causeway closed in both ways until the evening drive as they worked to remove some 40 disabled vehicles from the bridge.
Dufrechou said his police officers are also involved in crashes.
"I wish I could tell you the number of crashes, it's not good."
He said none of the vehicles went into the water, but there were numerous injuries.
