The New Orleans City Council is asking local law enforcement leaders to not direct city funds to any abortion investigations under the state’s newly passed abortion “trigger law.”
As WWLTV reports, the seven city councilmembers authored a resolution requesting the New Orleans Police Department, the Orleans Sheriff’s Office, and the Orleans District Attorney’s Office to not direct city funding towards such investigations under the new law.

The resolution also asks the agencies to “not cooperate with other governmental agencies about any abortion, miscarriage, or reproductive health care act. Unless such information is provided to defend the patient’s right to abortion care or health care provider’s right to provide that care.”
However, the resolution does not stop abortion investigation entirely. The resolution still allows funding as required by certain state and federal laws.
The motion will appear on the agenda at the next regular session city council meeting on July 7.
