The City of New Orleans confirms 20 people at the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center tested positive for COVID-19.
Eight of the 42 juvenile detainees and 12 of the 56 staff workers at the center all tested positive for the virus.
The city says the all the juveniles were asymptomatic at the time of testing. Further testing of youth and staff is ongoing.
“Immediately following notification of the positive cases, all proper protocols have been followed according to state and local COVID-19 guidelines,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s office said in a statement released Friday. “Families of the youth as well as attorneys have been notified accordingly and updated as each case evolves.”
