An Audubon Zoo event to support New Orleans police officers was abruptly cancelled last week by zoo officials because they feared it would be “unintentionally divisive”.
Today, the debate over it was the right move for the zoo continues with New Orleans city councilmember Joe Giarrusso sounding off on the Newell Normand show.
“I was surprised to see the news, I don’t think supporting the police, or fire, or EMS, or anybody else per se something that people should get upset about,” said Giarrusso.
“I think what is happening is, we are allowing issues to become conflated unnecessarily.”
He says the word he is hearing from residents in the black community is not less police but better policing and a need to get crime in the area under control.
“My preference is, we take a deep breath with these things and rather than be at one extreme or the other, we operate with more nuance,” said Giarrusso.
