A growing network of private and public cameras feeding the New Orleans Real Time Crime Center means more and more of the city is now under 24-hour surveillance.
In addition to the hundreds of city-owned crime cameras, Real-Time Crime Center Administrator, Ross Bourgeois told the New Orleans City Council on Monday that the city now has access to 500 privately-owned residential cameras.
Bourgeois told the council that business owners and residents now allow the Real-Time Crime Center to tap into their camera feeds. The expanded network aims to expand the crime center’s network of surveillance cameras which Bourgeois says helps the New Orleans Police Department.
“We are seeing a steady increase in utilization by our partners…we saved over 9,000 public safety manpower hours in 2021 and over 24,000 man-hours to date,” Bourgeois told the council.
Bourgeois did not say exactly how many surveillance cameras the city owns, however, a map on the city’s website shows hundreds of locations.
