The Louisiana National Guard's mission in New Orleans is not over. The guard today announced its security mission, which began late last year to cover the Sugar Bowl through Mardi Gras has been reauthorized for another six months.

The federal title 32 order means the U.S. government covers the cost of the deployment.

Approximately 120 guard soldiers will remain assigned to public safety efforts as the city moves into its spring festival season.

"Our soldiers are proud to stand alongside our law enforcement partners in support of the people of Louisiana," said Maj. Gen. Thomas Friloux, Adjutant General of Louisiana. "From New Year's through the Carnival season, this mission showed what can be accomplished when agencies work together with a shared focus on public safety. We remain committed to those partnerships as we continue supporting efforts to keep the city of New Orleans safe for residents and visitors."

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick expressed her support in a statement Monday afternoon.

"Governor Landry's decision to extend Louisiana National Guard support for another six months — and Mayor Helena Moreno's commitment to strengthen coordination — reflects a shared focus on public safety in New Orleans," said Chief Kirkpatrick. "As it has been for many years, the guard is a valued partner during major special events and high-demand periods, serving as a force multiplier while NOPD remains responsible for day-to-day policing and accountability."
