The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office says a case of domestic violence turned deadly Monday morning when a neighbor got involved.
Investigators say shortly before 3 a.m., deputies responded to a call of gunshots in the 200 block of East Richland Drive in the Mandeville area. There, they found a man dead from gunshot wounds outside a home and a woman suffering from stab wounds.
Detectives say the woman and the deceased were in a relationship and had been fighting. The woman escaped the house through a window and was attempting to get help as her boyfriend attacked her with a knife, according to the sheriff's office.
"A neighbor exited his residence and demanded he stop," said Lt. Suzanne Carboni, a spokesperson for STPSO. "When the suspect refused and continued the attack on his girlfriend, the neighbor fired his weapon, striking the suspect."
No charges have been filed as of Monday evening, but the case remains under investigation.
"This was a violent and extremely dangerous situation that unfolded in local neighborhood during early morning hours," said Sheriff Randy Smith. "“Based on the information we have at this time, the neighbor's actions appear to have prevented further serious injury or loss of life. Our detectives will continue to thoroughly investigate to ensure all facts are reviewed."
