Jefferson Parish officials have kicked off the construction for two new drainage pump stations along Veterans Boulevard.
“We are excited to break ground on the two new Veterans pump stations, because it will move more water off the streets faster in this important business corridor,” said Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vrancken. “Improving our drainage is always my goal.”
Authorities say that when the new stations are operational there should be less flooding in Metairie.
"The construction of two new drainage pump stations will improve flood control in the Metairie area, near the 17th Street Canal," according to a news release.
It goes on to say that Veterans Pump Station North will pump more than 35,000 gallons of water per minute from Veterans Boulevard to Cherry Street between Aris Avenue and the 17th Street canal. Veterans Pump Station South will pump more than 26,000 gallons per minute from Veterans Boulevard to the I-10 Service Road, between West William David Parkway and the 17th Street canal.
