Survivors of sexual abuse by clergy and other officials within the Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans will receive a $230 million settlement, in a ruling today from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Meredith Grabill.

"We are pleased that this is the end of this process," said New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond. "Most importantly, this is about the survivors, and it's very important that they will hopefully through this process find some closure."

The settlement will create a trust fund with money coming from various branches of the church: $70 million from the archdiocese, $60 million from its parishes and charities, $70 million from anticipated proceeds from the sale of a senior living facility, and $30 million from insurance.

Payments to eligible abuse survivors could begin as soon as early 2026.
