In a first-of-its-kind vote, the New Orleans City Council today approved the nomination of Ann Kirkpatrick to New Orleans Police Superintendent.
The vote was 6-1. Oliver Thomas was the lone "nay."

Thomas had previously said that he thought Interim Chief Michelle Woodfork would have been the better choice.
Kirkpatrick assumes command of a police department that is at its lowest staffing level in modern history.
The NOPD has barely 900 officers on the force.
The goal is 1,200.
While crime in New Orleans skyrocketed in 2021 and 2022, some violent crime rates, such as homicide, have fallen this year.
