New Orleans City Council voting on Sewerage & Water Board changes

The New Orleans City Council votes Thursday on major changes to the Sewerage and Water Board. It's part of the new authority the city has over the water system, after a change in state law.

"The current governance structure is broken," and has been for some time, says New Orleans City Councilmember Aimee McCarron.

That's why the Moreno administration is set to replace four members of the water board. McCarron tells us what the city is looking for:

"We are really looking for a wide variety of some expertise, so we've got engineers on there, we've got finance people on there, we've got people that have water management," said McCarron. "People that we know, that we can collaborate very closely with, something that we haven't, the city hasn't and the council hasn't really had the opportunity to do in the past."

And while City Hall may look like it's coming in right off the bat with some big swings, McCarron cautions it's going to take a long time of intense work to correct a lot of the water system's problems.

"It is not a magic button, but the people trusted us and elected us to do good work for them, and I think it will take time," McCarron said.
