Fresh off the Louisiana legislature granting the city of New Orleans more control over the state-created Sewerage and Water Board, Mayor Helena Moreno announced the creation of a new advisory group to help the city make better decisions when it comes to water and drainage.

"We need a group of, really, experts in the room, to help kind of advise us as we start to propose these different ideas," said Moreno.

The mayor told WWL's Newell Normand she wants to make sure they don't make changes that end up making things worse.

The mayor's executive order sets up the Public Utility Modernization Process Subgroup (PUMPS) to examine ways to make changes to the sewerage and water board's structure.

"The overall approach here is to create better outcomes," she said.

Moreno said lawmakers were actually happy to help transfer more control of the S&WB to the city.

"The legislature is sick of dealing with it, of us constantly having to go to the legislature for the most minor changes to Sewerage and Water Board, for us not able to address immediate issues quickly because we would have to wait until the session starts to go try to address these issues," she said.
