New Orleans curfew lifted, no longer remains in effect

Curfew

UPDATE: The curfew has been lifted for Orleans Parish as of 6:00 am Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Just because the street lights are coming back on in New Orleans, it doesn't mean you can re-start your nightlife. New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said the curfew is in effect 'til further notice.

"We will definitely still have a curfew tonight," Chief Ferguson said during the city of New Orleans Hurricane Ida news conference Monday afternoon.

Chief Ferguson said even though 70 percent of the city has its power back, there are plenty of neighborhoods still in pitch black when night falls, and the curfew is the best way to combat looting right now. But with more power coming back on, he said they are reviewing the policy daily.

"I will look at this tomorrow and I will look at this on Wednesday and throughout the week," said Chief Ferguson. "In the event, we lift this curfew prior to all communities receiving their power, we will put in place a deployment to address or get some visibility to deter any looting in those neighborhoods."

The chief asked residents to just be patient.
