Commuters on the I-10 this morning near Elysian fields could see fire and smoke from a nearby blaze.
The New Orleans Fire Department says it was a blaze few blocks away on North Rocheblave at Allen Street.
Several homes and a vehicle were damaged or destroyed.
The houses were not occupied.
NOFD says they needed to strike a second alarm to get additional fire crews to the scene to help battle the blaze.
The initial call came in around 6:15am.
NOFD Capt. Edwin Holmes says, "The first NOFD unit arrived at 6:19 a.m., finding a small bus, an unoccupied double and an unoccupied two-story fourplex in the 1900 block of N. Rocheblave St. all heavily involved in flames."
He says no one was living in any of the six residences. None of them had utilities either. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Neighbors said it appeared to have started in the bus parked near one of the homes that burned.
There had been an earlier report of a trash fire nearby.
