New Orleans has a storied history of hosting major sporting events and that shows no signs of slowing any time soon. Jay Cicero, President and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, says there’s an incredible lineup of major sporting events coming to the New Orleans area beyond the classic fare many are used to. “We had a really good year last year and have some new events coming this year. That’s been our focus: we want to diversify the events we’re bringing in and managing,” Cicero says. “We’re really diversifying what we bring here beyond Super Bowls and Final Fours,” he went on to add.

From the Savannah Bananas and Hondo Rodeo Fest to the X Games, WWE Money in the Bank, and more, these events will boost the area’s economy and strengthen New Orleans’ reputation as a premier sports destination. “This is the first ever X Games championship and it’s here in New Orleans. So, it’s going to be the best of the best as far as competitors are concerned,” noted Cicero. The championships will run from July 24-26 at Caesar’s Superdome, Champion’s Square, and the Smoothie King Center as well.

While Cisero says he’s excited to see how much of a draw the championship will be and the new faces it will bring to the city, he also understands that New Orleans needs to play host to the tried-and-true classics as well. “We have a lot of new events, but we’re still looking to attract those big, classic events that we’ve held here in the past as well,” Cicero emphasized.

The NFL just awarded the 2030 Super Bowl to Nashville. Cisero says that means the clock starts now when it comes to pitching the Crescent City for the next available spot. “We don’t know the timeline just yet, but, by all accounts we should be invited soon. There are other cities that are certainly interested in 2031 also, but we’ll see,” he went on to add.
