Today, members of the Louisiana National Guard deployed to New Orleans, to add extra security for New Year's Eve, the Sugar Bowl, and Mardi Gras.
There are about 350 soldiers in this deployment.
It comes as the city of New Orleans is asking the U.S. government for more resources during one of the busiest times of the year for tourism, while a new security plan for Bourbon Street is still in the works, coming up on one year since the attack that killed 14 people.
Former New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas says Bourbon Street poses a lot of challenges when it comes to devising a security plan.
"Bourbon Street is not just a place for people to have a party," the former NOPD chief explained. "It's a business, it's a residence, it's a transaction of tourism."
Serpas says it's not like closing off Times Square for one night, and a lot of different pieces must fit into the puzzle.
"They only do that a couple of times a year," he said of New York's famous crossroads. "Bourbon Street is every night in New Orleans. Royal Street is every day in New Orleans."
