JP Morrell: New Orleans pothole program is just beginning

“For the last decade or so, we were putting away 1/100th of the potholes that were out there. The goal is to step up the pothole program," says New Orleans City Councilman JP Morrell

While New Orleanians have been widely enthusiastic about the number of potholes being filled so quickly in the city, it’s also understood that this patchwork approach is part of a larger problem that will need to be addressed. New Orleans City Council President JP Morrell says city leadership is aware of that and is taking several steps simultaneously to combat the issue.

“For the last decade or so, we were putting away 1/100th of the potholes that were out there. The goal is to step up the pothole program, but we’re also working with our Deputy CAO of Infrastructure simultaneously on the long-term resurfacing as well. So, we’re doing both,” Morrell emphasized.

Morrell says the potholes being filled are separate from the asphalt program the city is using unused bond money for, but the issues need to be tackled side-by-side to better serve the citizens of New Orleans.

“For those individuals who have a street with a pothole that will take out your tire or the front end of your car, it’s just as important to have the temporary solution happen in a timely manner as well as the permanent solution. So, we’re doing both and expediting everything simultaneously,” added the Council President.
