New Orleans reinstates indoor mask mandate

City of N.O.

With the Omicron strain of the coronavirus causing surging infections, the city of New Orleans today announced it is reinstating an indoor mask mandate starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

"The city of New Orleans is reinstating the indoor mask mandate at all indoor spaces, including schools, which most of ours, thank goodness, have already adopted," said New Orleans Health Department Director Dr. Jennifer Avegno, "effective tomorrow at 6 a.m., and will remain in place until further notice."

Dr. Avegno noted that while New Orleans residents have been good about getting vaccinated, with Mardi Gras and its influx of visitors looming, now is the time to take more precautions.

And your old hand-made from mask the spring of 2020 might not cut it anymore.

"We strongly recommend a high-quality mask, and by that I mean a surgical mask, KN-95 or N-95, to provide the most robust protection," said Dr. Avegno. Unlike the spring of 2020, surgical masks and KN-95 grade masks are now easier to find in stores.
