New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno announced that the city will soon begin a a $2.8 million initiative to repair street lights.
"It is going to prioritize lighting up our interstates and also the high-rise bridge along with some of our main routes," the mayor said during a Tuesday afternoon news conference.
Moreno said the work will also involved replacing copper wiring, which frequently gets looted, for less-costly aluminum.
"So we will be switching out copper wiring with aluminum wiring or turning some of these lights into solar lights as well so we no longer have to worry about copper theft," Moreno said.
The $2.8 million comes from what remains of a $5 million dollar fine Entergy paid for the 2018 astroturfing incident -- sending paid performers to New Orleans City Council meetings, pretending to be residents speaking in favor of the company's then-proposed New Orleans Power Station.
The New Orleans City Council will vote on the funding at Wednesday's special meeting.
