Louisiana is a pro-life state, yes or no? Results of a new poll may surprise you.
In a survey of one thousand likely voters in Louisiana, more self-identified as "pro-choice" -- 49 percent -- than the 44 percent answering "pro-life." And when asked about exceptions to Louisiana's abortion ban, pollster John Couvillon says the difference widened even more.
"The strongest one, from the standpoint of the support being overwhelming, is 'protect the patient's health.' That was 73 to 18 percent statewide in favor of that exception," said Couvillon.
And when asked if they would support amending the Louisiana constitution to establish a right to have an abortion, 53 percent said they would support or strongly support it.
It is quite a switch from In November 2020, when 62 percent of voters said there is no right to abortion in Louisiana.
Couvillon says there seems to have been a shift after the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"And you're faced with the prospect of draconian laws, I think that has changes some people's opinions about if they truly are pro-life or pro-choice or do they favor some level of exceptions," he said.
Of the individuals surveyed, 38 percent were Republican, 39 percent Democratic, and 23 percent Independent.
"It's a case of a statistically significant number of Republicans are supporting these exceptions," said Couvillon. "That is the challenge the legislature will have: getting an accurate gauge of how strict or how not strict the abortion laws on the books are to be."
