WWL midday host and former Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says justice was served in the George Floyd murder case and the conviction of Derek Chauvin "is what should have happened."
"For a long, long time, I used to say, 'you're in the credibility business, you're not in the police business," said Normand "And without credibility, you're of no value to anyone. You're not of any value to the community, you're not of any value to the court, and you're not of any value to this agency.'
"This is a tough business. Even when you do everything right, you can have ugly outcomes."
Normand said Chauvin made the mistake of letting his emotions get the better of him.
"It's just how I was trained," he said of keeping emotion out of police work. "We spend a lot of time training officers to follow that same model. Unfortunately, they don't always heed the advice. Derek Chauvin in this case knew better. For whatever reason, he chose a path to stay on top of George Floyd for an excessive amount of time and this is what happens and what should have happened."
