Newell Normand: 'Little thugs are trying to ruin' everything, including Cam Jordan giving New Orleans kids free sneakers

Can't we have anything nice? That question was begged by the fact gunshots were fired outside of a charity event where Saints defensive end Cam Jordan was giving sneakers to young people.

Bullet holes were left in windows in the French Quarter, although no one was injured. There were 30 children on the scene when gunshots went off.

"What happens, gunshots," WWL's Newell Normand said. "This is a man, a leader in the community ... This is supposed to be great. Who are these people that think that this is the right thing to do, to go and shoot up an event, a charity event for kids?"

Newell described the shooters as 'little thugs trying to ruin it for everyone.' Police later said the shooting was the result of a fight outside Legendairy, a milkshake bar next to Sneaker Politics, which led to shots fired.

A witness told Fox 8 that a "fight broke out before bullets came through the windows of the milkshake bar towards the table they were sitting at, saying her sister felt them fly above her head. She said her family hid in the back freezer until police came to get them."

Jordan put a statement on X about the shooting, writing, "I’m just glad nobody was hurt from my event at politics and shout out to @Saints@Sneakerpolitics and YEP staff for being orderly and keeping calm in a not so calm situation, being under control and being able to finish the event somehow God is good no one was hurt."

Newell said incidents like this stem from the 'culture of non-compliance' that's rife in New Orleans, which has people just doing whatever they want, whenever they want to do it.

Jordan’s God Iz Love Foundation was partnering with Youth Empowerment Project NOLA for the sneaker giveaway at Sneaker Politics on Chartres Street.
