Today, the National Hurricane Center increased the chance of a Pacific Hurricane redeveloping in the Gulf of Mexico.
Hurricane Agatha is forecast to cross Mexico in the next couple of days. What's left of it could drift over the Gulf.
"Some gradual development is possible within this system in the far southwest Gulf of Mexico around mid-week in the northwest Caribbean by the latter part of this week as it drifts eastward or northeastward," the Hurricane Center explains.
Regardless of development, locally heavy rains will be possible across southern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, and Belize through the week.
WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone says regardless of if it develops, it is likely going to move to the east of Louisiana.
He says Florida is the more likely destination for the system next weekend.
The Hurricane Center says:
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...40 percent.
