NHC: Tropical system could form in Atlantic this week

Tropical System
National Hurricane Center

We could see the first tropical system in the Atlantic Basin form in the coming days. The good news is that this system poses no threat to Louisiana or the rest of the Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking a low pressure system located about 600 miles east-northeast of Bermuda. That storm, meteorologists say, is producing gale-force winds. While shower and thunderstorm activity within that system is disorganized, forecasters say they believe the conditions in the Atlantic Ocean are "favorable for further development, and an increase in thunderstorm activity could result in the formation of a short-lived tropical depression or tropical storm today or tonight."

Even if the system develops into a tropical depression or a tropical storm, NHC forecasters say the system will encounter unfavorable conditions that will weaken it quickly.

As of Monday night, the NHC is giving the system a 60-percent chance of developing into a depression or a tropical storm within the next week.
