U.S. Marshals and NOPD today released more details about the fatal shooting of a suspect earlier this month as a task force served a warrant in Central City.
Authorities were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for 22-year-old Terrell Russell, wanted for murder, on February 10. U.S. Marshal Scott Illing says Russell aimed a firearm at officers.
"Two officers fired their weapons," said Illing. "Preliminary investigation reveled that Mr. Russell was struck by one bullet to the chest, and he succumbed to his injuries."
Marshal Illing says the fatal shot came from one of his deputies.
The marshal said no one on the scene was wearing body cameras, not even the NOPD officers, because an agreement with the marshals service to allow for the use of them in joint task forces hasn't been finalized yet.
"The U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force has been working with NOPD to sign an agreement that will allow officers in the future to wear body-worn cameras in accordance with Department of Justice policy," Illing said.
