A man wanted for second-degree murder was killed after firing shots at New Orleans Police officers in Central City, according to police.
The shooting happened near Louisiana Avenue and South Robertson Street about 9:40 a.m. Thursday morning.
It is reported the suspected shooter fired on officers from the upper floors of an apartment in the 3300 block of South Robertson Street. New Orleans Police Department's Violent Offender Warrant Squad was at the apartment complex when the shots were fired.
According to an initial NOPD report, NOPD officers and US Marshals were serving a high-risk warrant on a subject wanted for second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder that happened August 13 in the 2200 block of Piety Street.
Nola.com reports that multiple law enforcement sources identify the suspect killed as 22-year-old Terrell Russell.
While serving the warrant, police say the subject was armed. After attempting to negotiate a surrender, the suspect brandished a weapon and officers and marshals opened fire, killing the suspect.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell arrived on the scene to show her support for the NOPD.
“This is still a very active investigation but it is also an example of how the New Orleans Police Department in partnership with the U.S. Marshal continue to engage, continue to put their lives on the line to protect and serve in spite of criticisms, they do the job, they show up every single day,” said Cantrell.

This is the second time NOPD officers were involved in an exchange of gunfire this week.
Yesterday, NOPD officers got into a shootout with a suspect at the corner of N. Rocheblave and St. Louis Street near the Lafitte Greenway. The suspect in that incident was shot three times in the leg.
