The dockworkers strike is making headlines beyond just the fight of man vs machine, but also production vs economy.
Social media blew up with posts of people buying up things like toilet paper at some stores. But the panic may not be warranted, at least not now.
LSU economist, Dr. Jim Richardson says that the impacts of the strike won't be felt immediately.
"The big stores, even after a month, will have worked through backlog. The smaller stores would see impacts first."
Richardson says if the strike nears the thirty day mark, shoppers could start to pick up one or two extra packages of necessary items
The strike works more on a sliding scale according to Dr. Richardson. He says one to two weeks won't bring much of a change.
"You get into four or five weeks then you can start buying one or two more packages of essentials."
Then there's Christmas! Holiday shopping is safe for now, however, Dr. Richardson does have one piece of advice.
"If there is a specialty item you need for a child, grandchild, or other loved one you may want to grab it now."
