A 60-year-old woman is dead and a family of three is displaced after firefighters say a space heater sparked a two-alarm fire in Algiers.
It happened around 2 a.m. Friday at a duplex on Diane Street near General Meyer Avenue.
According to a New Orleans Fire Department spokesperson, the home was engulfed when they arrived with heavy smoke emanating from the structure. Rescue teams found the victim dead inside her half of the duplex. Investigators say they found a space heater next to the victim's bed. That, they say, is what started the blaze.
A family of three who lived on the other side of the duplex was not home when the fire started.
