The NOLA Coalition, made up of more than 400 New Orleans organizations from business leaders to non-profits to civic associations, says it believes New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell's plans for $80 million in new salary and benefits to recruit and retain police officers; reassignments to put more cops on the streets; leadership changes in the Public Integrity Bureau and other recommendations from consultants show steps toward improving working conditions for New Orleans Police officers.
At the same time, the coalition says it wants to see more specifics.
"Specifically...how some elements, such as civilianization, will be implemented; and, how the pay and benefits increases will be sustained over time," the organization said in a news release.
"While support for NOPD is central to the Coalition’s two-part plan, other elements are equally critical, including accountability and coordination across the entire criminal justice system; and, investment in youth services, to drive generational change," the coalition said.
