Don’t expect New Orleans to return to twice a week garbage pickup in the near future. That’s news from today’s New Orleans City Council Public Works Committee meeting.
Matt Tori with the Mayor’s office told councilmembers that the city currently does not have have the resources to return to pre-Ida twice weekly pickup in both service areas. He indicated that status quo will not be changing imminently.
Councilman Joe Giarrusso relayed the frustration that many in the city are feeling about this new normal. He said residents are now paying full price for half the service.
“People are paying for a contractual service that is supposed to be twice a week, that is not happening, even if the volume is the same they are not getting twice a week,” said Giarrusso. “Also, they are paying for recycling and not getting that at all.”
There was no suggestion from Tori that sanitation fees would be reduced to match the now lower level of service.
Other news out the committee was that the contract for garbage pickup in Service Area 2, currently held by Metro, will be rebid early next month. Under the new plan Service Area 2 will be split into two sub-sectors, one east, and one west.
