“We even had to get more volunteers to open these envelopes, so we could do it as expeditiously as possible and make sure that people’s voices are heard,” says Elaine Carter, Co-Chair of the recall effort NoLaToya.org, the grassroots movement to recall Mayor Latoya Cantrell.
Despite skeptics saying that mailing out recall petition sheets wouldn’t work, Carter says she was shocked to find return mailers coming in by the thousands.
“Before we started counting the mailers we were past halfway, which was a blessing for everybody,” Carter says. “We really wanted to make sure we did that at the halfway point and we did succeed with that and that was just with our events. We’re in the process of counting all of these mailed in petitions.”
Carter explains why the recall effort is steaming along like a freight train: “The people of New Orleans are hurting. Our quality of life—this is not normal, unfortunately we live in it long enough, and we live in this bubble we think that it’s normal but it’s not. We deserve a better quality of life.”
